My friend, Tess (whom I've known since 5th grade), was organizing her desk with a small bit of help from me and realized that she had an extra 3-hole punch and sketchbook, so she gave them to me as my 'halfy birthday' presents. It definitely had me cracked up. Here is a photo of my gifts:
Now, I know that it seems silly...it is. However, I want to remember the silly things. Sometimes it really is the thought that counts. In all honesty, I will make good use of my 3-hole punch and sketch-book. Those are two useful items. But I don't think I'll look back and remember that I'm glad she gave me her extra school supplies. I think I'll look back and remember having a fun time visiting and laughing while organizing a dorm room.
This evening we had a banquet to go to (freshmen anyway). Everyone sat with their teams (students who have the same mentor) at big round tables. I got to talk to some students that I hadn't before and had a wonderful time joking about random things. At one point I was laughing so hard I was nearly crying - and I don't know if anyone else feels this way, but I love laughing that hard. Sure, I look like an idiot, but I'm not going to let that keep me from laughing.
When we finished eating, several students ended up making noises with their wet fingers on the rims of their glasses. Not to be outdone, Tess and Whitney proceeded to make quite a bit of noise with their own glasses. It was quite entertaining and I actually got a few poorly lit photos from it:
One thing that had everyone at our table cracked up for a bit was a conversation had about bacon. I'm not even sure how it came up, but we were discussing how wonderful bacon tastes. Whitney finally described it in a way that I'd never heard before: "Bacon is an edible slice of God's love." Needless to say, we all thought that was great. Maybe no one else thinks it's cool, but whenever I think of bacon, I will now think about that conversation. Maybe I'll laugh so hard that I'll cry. And, you know what, I'm good with that.
